I woke early this morning and over coffee came across an article by the Pew Charitable Trust regarding the FISH-I AFRICA program between several countries in Africa aimed at stopping illegal fishing.
The article talks about the government of the Seychelles turning away the South Korean fishing boat Premier from entering port because of the Premiers suspected illegal fishing practices in the Indian Ocean. You can read the entire article here.
I find myself hopeful when I read these type articles. Whether it is one person trying to make a difference with a beach cleanup, or local fishermen initiating a program to put there used fishing line in containers for recycling, or a group of African government creating a program to stop illegal fishing, there are positive things happening to help our oceans. Far too often we only hear about the bad things and not the good. For today I am going to think about these countries having the courage to say no even when faced with losing the profits from these boats offloading their catches in the countries ports.
CHEERS FISH-I AFRICA !!
